About Jean Girigori
Jean with her family
The journey of Jean Girigori (1948), born on a boat amidst the Caribbean waves, marked the beginning of a life dedicated to honoring the splendor of her island heritage. Raised in Santo Domingo by her mother and grandfather, Jean's early years were spent surrounded by the rich culture of Curaçaoan immigrants. At 5 years old they moved to the rural countryside of the Dominican Republic.

Despite hardships endured, including childhood trauma, Jean's resilience and artistic talents flourished. Her path to becoming a painter crystallized during a transformative period in Haiti, where she met acclaimed artist Paul Jorge Hector, eventually marrying him. This union catalyzed her artistic journey, leading to exhibitions across Haiti, Santo Domingo, and Jamaica.

In 1978, Jean found her artistic home in Curaçao, her father's birthplace, where she showcased her work for the first time. Further studies in New York, the Netherlands, and Latin America enriched her technique and vision, garnering international recognition.

Jean's art serves as a poignant testament to the struggles and resilience of Caribbean life, particularly the plight of children. Through her vibrant canvases, she voices a passionate plea for social justice and reform, especially in her native Santo Domingo.

Renowned for her warmth, humor, and spiritual depth, Jean remains committed to her craft, envisioning monumental works that embody her stories and philosophy. Her art, a reflection of Caribbean joys and sorrows, continues to provoke thought and inspire change.
